KENNESAW, GA (AP) - Rob Diggs scored 20 points, while Regis Koundjia and Dokun Akingbade each added a double-double as George Washington weathered a furious second-half comeback by Kennesaw State before pulling away for a 69-52 victory on Tuesday night.
Trailing 42-21 at the half, the host Owls (1-3) went on a 22-2 run - paced by Ronell Wooten, who scored 17 of his game-high 24 points over a span of 6:15 that included hitting five straight 3-point attempts - to close the gap to 46-43 on Keonte Keith's layup with 13:32 remaining.
But Akingbade, who finished with 14 points and 12 rebounds, beat two KSU players to a loose ball and scored, and then converted an offensive rebound on his own missed free throw to turn the possession into a four-point play to extend the lead back to seven points with 12:19 left.
The play also ignited a run of 12 straight points by George Washington (4-0) before KSU was able to score again, and the Colonials held the Owls without a field goal for the next 10:21 to gain breathing room.
Koundjia finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds and Maureece Rice had 11 for GW, which tied a 23-year-old school record with 14 blocked shots on the night.
Shuan Stegall was the only other KSU player in double figures with 14 points to go along with 10 rebounds.
Notes: Tonight's 14 blocks equalled the the GW record for blocked shots also accomplished on Dec. 1, 1983 against Catholic at Charles E. Smith Athletic Center.
Akingbade's double-double was the first of his career and his 14 points, 12 rebounds and four blocked shots are all career highs.
Koundjia's 10 rebounds equalled his career high.
One of the officials for the game was former Atlanta Braves catcher Bruce Benedict.
