PHILADELPHIA, PA - The George Washington University baseball team was selected to finish second in the Atlantic 10 Conference for the 2006 season as voted on by the league's head coaches. A-10 newcomer Charlotte was tabbed to finish first.
The Colonials posted the conference's highest win total with 41 in 2005. GW won its second consecutive A-10 West Division Title and advanced to its fifth straight conference tournament last year, falling to Rhode Island in the championship game.
The Colonials return back-to-back Atlantic 10 All-Conference First Team selection RHP Derrik Lutz (Grantville, PA/Lower Dauphin) (8-1, 2.79 ERA) and INF Tom Shanley (Stanfordville, NY/Pine Plains) (.366 avg., 8 HR, 43 RBI) in 2006 when they open the season at James Madison University Feb. 22.
GW's home debut at Barcroft Park in Arlington, VA is scheduled for March 7 against UMBC. A-10 play begins March 24 at Charlotte.
The Conference will employ a one-division format in 2006, with the top six teams advancing to the A-10 Championship Tournament, to be held May 24-27 at Houlihan Park at Jack Coffey Field, on the campus of Fordham University.
