WASHINGTON, DC -- Defending Atlantic 10 champion George Washington University has announced its 2005-06 men's basketball schedule, which includes at least three nationally televised games, plus a minimum of three regionally televised appearances. The Atlantic 10 TV Network also will air selected GW games to be announced at a later date.
The Colonials will play three games against opponents from the 2005 NCAA Tournament field including a home-and-home series against Charlotte, a new Atlantic 10 Conference member and 2005 NCAA Tournament participant. GW's other opponent from the 2005 NCAA Tournament field will be North Carolina State on Dec. 31 at Raleigh, NC. The Colonials also play five games against opponents from the 2005 NIT field: Boston University, Maryland, Temple and a pair against NIT runner-up Saint Joseph's.
Under fifth-year head coach Karl Hobbs, GW opens the season playing six of its first eight games at home beginning with the opener on Nov. 23 against Kennesaw State. GW also faces crosstown rival Maryland on Dec. 5 at MCI Center in the 11th Annual BB&T Classic. The Jan. 16 game with Stony Brook marks the return of former GW Associate Head Coach Steve Pikiell to Charles E. Smith Athletic Center when he brings his Seawolves to Washington.
GW was tabbed the No. 11 team in the country in a preseason Top 25 poll by CBSSportsLine.com. The Colonials also have been ranked No. 14 by FoxSports.com and 27th in ESPN.com's Sizzling Summer Top 50 this preseason.
The Atlantic 10 Conference adds two new members this year in Charlotte and Saint Louis. Gone is the East-West Division format of the last 10 years in favor of one 14-team league. Under the new format, GW will play a home-and-home series against Charlotte, Richmond and Saint Joseph's in 2005-06. The Colonials will face the other A-10 teams just once with home games against Saint Louis, Rhode Island, Dayton, Massachusetts and La Salle in addition to the home games with Charlotte, Saint Joseph's and Richmond. GW will travel to Temple, Duquesne, Xavier, Fordham and St. Bonaventure in 2005-06 with those teams coming to Charles E. Smith Athletic Center in 2006-07.
The Atlantic 10 Championship Tournament will again be played at Cincinnati's U.S. Bank Arena March 8-11. All quarterfinal games, both semifinal games and the championship, are scheduled to be televised.
The defending A-10 champion Colonials, 22-8 in 2004-05, return four of five starters, including A-10 All-Conference selections Pops Mensah-Bonsu (London, England), and leading rebounder Mike Hall (Chicago, IL), the A-10's Sixth Man of the Year, J.R. Pinnock (McDonough, GA), along with five other returning letterwinners and three highly-touted freshmen and LSU transfer Regis Koundjia (Bangui, Central African Republic) who becomes eligible in late December.
