WASHINGTON, DC - The Baltimore Orioles announced Thursday that George Washington University alumnus Sam Perlozzo has been promoted from bench coach to interim manager, making him the first-ever GW graduate to lead a major league baseball team.
Perlozzo, a 1973 GW graduate, was an infielder for the Colonials and an Academic All-American. He was inducted into GW's Athletic Hall of Fame in 1986.
The Cumberland, MD native is in his 10th season with the Orioles, spending his first five as third base coach before becoming bench coach in 2001.
Perlozzo is in his 19th season as a major-league coach, having also served on the staffs of the New York Mets, Cincinnati Reds and Seattle Mariners.
He was a manager in the Mets farm system from 1982 to 1986 and compiled a 364-263 record, winning three league championships and never having a losing record.
Perlozzo, 54, was signed as a player out of GW by the Minnesota Twins and played in 12 major league games in a span of three seasons (1977-78) for the Twins and San Diego Padres.
Perlozzo replaces Lee Mazzilli, who was fired by the Orioles, on an interim basis for the remainder of the season.
Perlozzo and current New York Yankees catcher John Flaherty are presently the only two former GW baseball players in the major leagues.
