WASHINGTON, DC - NBA superstar Ray Allen of the Seattle Sonics made an appearance at The George Washington University's Boys Basketball Camp on Thursday, June 30. Allen shared his philosophy on basketball with the campers and gave them a few tips on the art of the jumpshot. He also displayed his shooting prowess with a demonstration.
GW head coach Karl Hobbs mentored Allen when he was an assistant on Jim Calhoun's coaching staff at the University of Connecticut from 1994-01. A five-time NBA All-Star, Allen credited Hobbs with his professional success, calling the Colonials' head coach "a terrific coach who helped fine tune my fundamentals."
While Hobbs was on the Huskies' coaching staff, Connecticut made six NCAA Tournament appearances and was crowned national champions in 1998-99. Hobbs recruited and coached some of the Huskies' all-time greats and he has guided the careers of several players who have gone on to play in the NBA, including the league's 2005 Rookie of the Year, Emeka Okafor of the Charlotte Bobcats, and Richard Hamilton of the Detroit Pistons.
Hobbs led GW to a 22-8 overall record last season, the school's first Atlantic 10 Tournament Championship, and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament, the school's first trip to the "Big Dance" in six years. He has a 64-53 mark at GW and was recently named a floor coach for the 2005 USA Basketball World University Games Team trials, which will be held later this month in Colorado Springs, CO.
Hobbs' boys basketball camp is held for two weeks each summer at the Charles E. Smith Athletics Center and is run by the George Washington men's basketball coaching staff.
