WASHINGTON, DC - Former Vanderbilt University star Rebecca Ferrell has been named assistant women's lacrosse coach at The George Washington University, Colonials Head Coach Chrissy Lombard announced on Wednesday, July 20. Ferrell spent the previous two seasons as the head coach at Ravenwood High School in Brentwood, TN where she led the team to two straight state championship games.
Ferrell will assist Lombard with recruiting and mentor the Colonials defenders. In addition, she will help run the day-to-day aspects of the program, including developing practice plans and scouting opponents.
"Having played at a top program like Vanderbilt, Rebecca brings with her a wealth of experience and lacrosse knowledge, particularly on the defensive aspects of the game," Lombard said. "She has already proven herself as a coach on the high school level and I'm delighted to have her join our staff. She will be a tremendous asset to the program."
Ferrell led Ravenwood to a 22-1 record last season, with its only loss coming in the state title game. In 2004, her first season at the helm of the program, she guided the squad to its first appearance in the state championship game in just the second year of Ravenwood's women's lacrosse program. That same season, Ferrell was selected to coach the Tennessee/Georgia All-Star Team and guided the team to a 3-2 record.
As a defender at Vanderbilt from 2000-04, Ferrell earned four letters and was a starter her final three seasons. She helped the Commodores to an appearance in the 2002 NCAA Championship and a No. 6 national ranking. As a senior in 2003, she led Vanderbilt with 24 caused turnovers and finished her career with 70 caused turnovers and 81 ground balls. She was also named to the Southeastern Conference (SEC) Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll in 2002-03.
In addition to her coaching and playing experience, Ferrell has served as the director of training for Stickhead Lacrosse Nashville, LLC since March of 2004. In that capacity, she administers training sessions for local lacrosse coaches and also helps generate marketing strategies for the company's products and services. In addition, Ferrell serves as the company's representative a local and national lacrosse camps in addition to other duties.
Ferrell, 25, graduated with a bachelor's degree in human and organizational development from Vanderbilt in 2003. She currently resides in Ellicott City, MD.
