Senior Day Ceremony Highlights Weekend

WASHINGTON, DC - The GW women's lacrosse team (11-3, 4-1 Atlantic 10) will host St. Mary's (CA) in its home finale at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, April 22 before heading to Amherst for an A-10 showdown with Massachusetts on Sunday, April 24 at 12:00 p.m. With a win over the Minutewomen, the Colonials can secure their first berth in the league championship tournament.
Prior to the St. Mary's contest, nine Colonials seniors will be honored as part of Senior Day. Erin Berry, Nicole Cozzolino, Lia Harris, Jenny Heisler, Jamie Lee, Heidi Mayer, Meghan McDonough, Mary Monaghan, and Deena Vezo represent the first class that have been part of the team since the program's beginning in 2002. Over the four years, GW's overall record has improved every season, from 4-12 its first season, to 7-8 in 2003, to 8-9 last season, and an 11-3 mark so far this year.
GW brought home both A-10 weekly honors this past week after wins over Saint Joseph's and Colgate. Sophomore Laura Hostetler was named the co-Player of the Week following a weekend which saw her tie the GW record for points in a game with 10 and become the team's all-time leading points scorer with two goals and two assists against Colgate. Her performance vaulted her into sixth in the nation in points per game at 4.57.
Freshman goalkeeper Caitlin Garman picked up Rookie of the Week honors for the second straight week after earning the win against Saint Joseph's and helping shut down Colgate's offense in the second half of GW's match with the Raiders. Garman is 7-1 this season and leads the nation in goals-against average at 6.1. She is one win away from tying the GW single-season record for victories.
As a team, the Colonials are sixth in Division I in ground balls per game (26.7) and they are ranked 14th in scoring defense (7.86).
Saint Mary's is 1-11 through 12 games this season. Its only win of the year came against La Salle on March 11. The Gaels are averaging just 6.67 goals per outing in 2005 and have been outscored, 188-80.
Jen Utley leads the club with 20 points, while Jackie Spencer and Rosy Iaccino are the team's top two goal scorers with 14 tallies each.
Like Saint Mary's, Massachusetts has also struggled this season. The Minutewomen own an overall record of 4-9 and they are tied for fifth in the league with a 1-3 conference record. Massachusetts has dropped its last three, all conference games, and have not won since beating La Salle on April 8.
Kerri Connerty leads Massachusetts with 40 points and she ranks fifth in the conference in assists per game (0.92). Lauren McCarthy has played the majority of the minutes in goal for the Minutewomen and ranks second in the A-10 in saves (122), but sports a 13.05 goals-against average.
The Colonials are 2-0 all-time against the Gaels and they are 1-2 versus Massachusetts. GW's only win against the minutewomen came in 2004, 11-10.
