WASHINGTON, DC -- George Washington's Brian Carroll (Crystal Lake, IL/Crystal Lake South) and Tim Johnson (Marblehead, MA/Gov. Dummer Academy) have been named the Atlantic 10 Conference Performer and Rookie of the Week, respectively, for men's golf, the league office has announced. It marks the seventh A-10 weekly honor for Carroll who was a three-time Rookie of the Week as a freshman, a two-time Performer of the Week as a sophomore last year and picked up the award earlier this season on Sept. 27. It marks the first A-10 weekly award for Johnson.
Carroll fired a three-over-par 147 (76-71) to pace the Colonials at the 36-hole William & Mary Invitational, Sunday and Monday, at the par-72, 7,120-yard Golden Horseshoe Golf Course in Williamsburg, VA. Carroll tied for second place out of 96 golfers. It marked his third Top-10 finish in eight outings this season and his seventh Top 10 in the last two seasons. He finished just three strokes off the pace. GW shot a team total 609 and placed fourth in the 18-team tournament hosted by the College of William & Mary. The field included five teams from the Atlantic 10 Conference, as well as Saint Louis University, which joins the league next year.
Carroll's outing improved his season stroke average to a team-best 74.5.
Johnson, a freshman competing in just his third collegiate tournament, carded a 12-over-par 156 (79-77) to place in a tie for 36th out of 96 total golfers. He is tied for fifth on the team with a 78.33 stroke average through six rounds.
GW's next competition takes place Saturday-Sunday, April 2-3, when it hosts the 36-hole George Washington Invitational at Swan Point Golf Club in Issue, MD.
