GW Baseball Pounds Georgia Southern 10-5

After jumping out to an early 1-0 lead, the Colonials went ahead 3-0 in the third inning when Simpson followed a one-out Rosenblat double with a two-run blast.
The Eagles cut the lead to 3-2 in their half of the third inning but GW second baseman Tom Shanley (Stanfordville, NY / Pine Plains), who recorded four hits in five at-bats in the game, put the Colonials up 5-2 with a bases loaded single in the fourth inning.
Simpson's second home run of the day came in the fifth inning when he led-off the frame with a blast to straight away centerfield, giving GW a 6-2 advantage.
The Colonials made it 8-2 in the sixth inning when first baseman Ryan Roberson (Silver Spring, MD / James H. Blake) drove in a pair of runs with a double.
GSU crept back to make it an 8-5 contest, but Rosenblat's two-run knock in the eighth inning sealed the game at 10-5 for the Colonials.
GW pitcher Avi Rasowsky (Glenmont, NY / Bethlehem Central) started and yielded a two-run home run from Eagles' right fielder Derrick Smith in his 3.2 innings of work.
Reliever Nate CasaGrande (1-0) (Bridgewater, NJ / College of New Jersey) struck out three hitters in three innings of work and earned the win.
GSU first baseman Greg Dowling posted a 3-for-4 game while Smith and shortstop Brandon Ponder each knocked in two runs for the Eagles.
GSU starter Dustin Evans (0-2) allowed five earned runs in four innings, as he suffered the loss.
Game two of the three-game series between GW and Georgia Southern is scheduled for Saturday at 3:00 pm.
The Colonials' RHP Josh Wilkie (Alpharetta, GA / Chattahoochee) will make his first start of the 2005 season and face the Eagles' LHP Everett Teaford (0-1).
