WASHINGTON, DC -- Former Louisiana State University basketball standout Regis Koundjia has been declared eligible to compete for the George Washington University men's basketball team, the GW Department of Athletics announced today.
A junior, Koundjia (pronounced "KOON-juh"), who transferred to George Washington last year, has satisfied his academic residency requirement and can play in GW's Dec. 30 game at No. 21/18 NC State. His eligibility at GW will include the remainder of the 2005-06 season and the entire 2006-07 season.
"He is as talented a guy as I have ever been around," GW coach Karl Hobbs remarked in a recent interview with the Washington Times.
The 6-foot-8 native of Bangui, Central African Republic, left LSU after averaging 12.3 minutes in six games as a sophomore in 2004-05 citing a lack of playing time. As a freshman in 2003-04, Koundjia started 20 of LSU's 29 games and played an average of 18.2 minutes per game in 27 games. He averaged 3.9 points and 3.6 rebounds for the Tigers who finished with an 18-11 record under coach John Brady.
No. 13/13 GW (8-0) next plays at No. 21/18 NC State (8-1) on Friday, Dec. 30 at 7:00 p.m. in Raleigh, NC. The game will be televised live on Fox SportsNet South and via tape delay on Comcast SportsNet at 11:00 p.m. (EST) and re-broadcast again on Dec. 31st at noon. The game will air live on WMET 1160 and WAGE 1200 AM.
