GW Releases 2006 Baseball Schedule

WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington University has released its 2006 baseball schedule that comprises a number of opponents that the team hasn't played in more than 10 years, including Michigan, which last met the Colonials in 1954.
After opening the season at James Madison University Feb. 22, GW travels to Chapel Hill, NC, to play a three-game series against head coach Steve Mrowka's alma mater, the North Carolina Tar Heels (the two teams last met in 1995). UNC ended last season ranked 21st in the nation.
The Colonials also travel to Charlottesville, VA, to face Virginia for the first time since 1996.
GW makes its home opener March 7 against UMBC before hosting Big South Conference member Liberty March 10-12, marking the first meeting between the two programs in 15 years.
GW will play another Big South team when it faces Winthrop, March 17-19, in the Eagles' three-day annual tournament in Rock Hill, SC. The Colonials open the tournament against Michigan and then faces Wagner (NY) for the first-time ever.
The Colonials will renew their rivalry with Maryland this season, as the teams will meet twice in 2006 at College Park.
Including JMU, GW will play five members of the Colonial Athletic Association for a total of 11 games. GW was a perfect 10-0 last year and, overall, holds a 15-game winning streak against CAA teams dating back to 2004.
Atlantic 10 Conference action for GW begins on the road March 24-26 against Charlotte, one of two new programs to join the league this year. Saint Louis, the other new A-10 team, visits GW May 5-7.
The Colonials will seek revenge against Rhode Island, which beat them in last year's A-10 Championship game, when they host the Rams March 31-April 2.
Overall, GW will play nine conference series in its attempt to qualify for its seventh straight A-10 Tournament, hosted this year by Fordham May 24-28 in the Bronx, NY.
