GW Baseball Names Don Norris New Assistant Coach

WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington University baseball program has added former University of Georgia assistant Don Norris to the coaching staff, head coach Steve Mrowka announced.
Norris' (Georgia '92) duties for the Colonials will include working with the hitters and the defense.
Norris' appointment at GW marks the second time he'll coach under the direction of Mrowka as he also served as his assistant for five years when Mrowka was head coach at Georgia College and State University.
Most recently, Norris served as an assistant coach at Georgia during the 2004 season where he worked with the hitters and infielders, and served as third base coach. He was also involved with recruiting and scheduling.
Norris' work with the hitters and infield defense helped lead the Bulldogs to a third place finish at the 2004 College World Series, a share of the Southeastern Conference title and a final national ranking of fourth in the country.
Georgia's entire starting infield earned All-Southeastern Conference honors while posting a .971 fielding percentage, second best in school history.
From 2001-03 Norris served as Georgia's director of baseball operations where he handled alumni relations, camps and assisted in various other duties.
A native of Lakeland, FL, Norris was a member of Mrowka's staff at Division II GC&SU from 1996-01. He was in charge of hitting and the infielders, and he also served as the recruiting coordinator.
In 2001, GC&SU posted a 41-18 record and a final national ranking of 10th in Collegiate Baseball's NCAA Division II poll.
From 1993 to 2001, Norris coached summer baseball, spending seven seasons in the elite Cape Cod Baseball League and two in the Northeast Collegiate League.
Norris managed the Orleans (MA) Cardinals in the CCBL from 1997-01. In 1999, he led Orleans to the playoffs with a team best 29-16 record and had seven of his players named to the CCBL East All-Star team, including league MVP, and current member of the San Francisco Giants, Lance Niekro. Norris' 2000 squad saw 16 players drafted, including one player in each of the first 10 rounds.
Overall, 19 players from his three Orleans teams were drafted, which tied the most of any CCBL team during that span. Norris remains one of only 25 managers in CCBL history to of amassed 100 or more victories.
Norris earned a bachelor's degree in environmental health science from Georgia in 1992. He began his collegiate career at Polk Community College (Winter Haven, FL) before transferring to Georgia in 1990.
He was an infielder for the Bulldogs from 1990-91 and was a member of their 1990 National Championship Team.
Following his Georgia playing career, Norris worked as a graduate assistant baseball coach at Valdosta State University and earned a master's degree in education in 1994. He spent the 1995 season as the head coach at Gordon College. In 1996, Norris was an assistant coach at Northwest Shoals Community College in Muscle Shoals, AL, before joining Mrowka at GC&SU.
