WASHINGTON, DC -- The George Washington volleyball team overcame a slow start to defeat struggling Georgetown, 3-1, Tuesday night at GU's McDonough Gym. After losing game one, 28-30, the Colonials won the next three games by the scores 31-29, 30-23, 30-22, including an impressive come-from-behind victory in game two, to improve to 10-12 on the season. It marked GW's third straight victory, all on the road.
After Georgetown had outplayed GW in game one and through most of game two, the turning point in the match took place late in the second game. With the Hoyas comfortably ahead, 28-19, GW scored five straight points to close within 28-24. A GW attack error gave the Hoyas the serve at game point, 29-24. Instead of closing out the game, Georgetown unravelled and committed three straight attack errors followed by a Shannon Parks kill to bring GW within one at 29-28 forcing Hoyas' coach Liu Li to call timeout.
After the timeout, GW senior Abigail Hatter crushed a kill to knot the game at 29-29. The Colonials took advantage of another Hoya error and followed with a powerful kill by Janine Brown for the improbable 31-29 victory as GW scored 12 of the game's last 13 points.
GW (10-12, 3-5 A-10) had a pair of players record double-doubles led by Lindsay Vernand's 15 kills and 13 digs. Janine Brown also contributed 10 kills and 14 digs while junior setter Kaimana Lee added 44 assists. Jessica Vesey led the Colonials with 16 digs.
Georgetown (5-15) was led by Jenny Weed's 20 kills and Rachel Nelson's 20 digs. The loss dropped the Hoyas to 0-7 at home this season.
For the match, the Colonials overcame 29 hitting errors to hit .165 with 58 kills in 176 attacks, while Georgetown hit .144 (64-37-187). GW benefitted from 54 Hoya miscues in the match.
The GW-GU match marks the second time the Colonials have gone up against a squad coached by a former Colonial. Liu Li (`96), the 1994 A-10 Player of the Year, is in her eighth year as coach of Georgetown. Earlier this season, GW defeated Delaware State coached by former Colonial, Renee Arnold (`01). With Tuesday's win, GW now leads the all-time series with the Hoyas, 30-27, dating back 30 years to the 1975 season.
GW is idle until Sunday when it hosts Charlotte in a key Atlantic 10 Conference match at 2:00 p.m. at Charles E. Smith Athletic Center.
