Volleyball Surprises Fordham, 3-2, in the Bronx

BRONX, NY -- The George Washington volleyball team hit .333 in the decisive fifth game to upend Fordham in an Atlantic 10 Conference match Sunday afternoon in New York City. The teams traded victories through the first four games before GW eventually won by scores of 30-25, 12-30, 30-24, 25-30 and 15-9 in a two-hour, 10-minute battle at historic Rose Hill Gym.
GW (9-12, 3-5 A-10) had three players record double-doubles led by Juliene McLaughlin's 13 kills and match-high 20 digs. Janine Brown also contributed 10 kills and 16 digs while junior setter Kaimana Lee added 51 assists and 13 digs.
After hitting .303 in game one, the Colonials could not find their rhythm in game two and suffered an 18-point rout while hitting -.030. GW righted the ship in game three and hit .213 before dipping to .167 in game four. In game five, the Colonials summoned the poise to double up the Rams in kills, 10-5, to capture the match. The triumph snapped GW's two-match losing streak to the much-improved Rams in a series dominated by the Colonials, 18-3.
Fordham (15-9, 3-4 A-10) was led by Marija Markovic's 15 kills and Stephanie Frost's 17 kills. The Rams entered Sunday's match having won four of its last five.
For the match, the Colonials overcame 29 hitting errors to hit .188 with 62 kills in 176 attacks, while Fordham hit .264 (62-19-163).
GW steps out of Atlantic 10 Conference action Tuesday when it plays Georgetown in an 8:00 p.m. match at GU's McDonough Gym. The GW-GU match marks the second time the Colonials have gone up against a squad coached by a former Colonial. Liu Li (`96), the 1994 A-10 Player of the Year, is in her eighth year as coach of Georgetown. Earlier this season, GW defeated Delaware State coached by former Colonial, Renee Arnold (`01).
