Golf Adds Two Standout Recruits

Washington, DC - The George Washington University has signed Tim Johnson (Marblehead, MA/Gov. Dummer Academy) and Alvaro Tapia (Panama City, Panama/Avon Old Farms (CT) to play for the GW golf team, coach Scott Allen has announced.
Johnson was recruited by Allen after he graduated from Governor Dummer Academy in 2003 but Johnson decided to take an extra year at the International Junior Golf Academy in Hilton Head Island, SC to improve his game and get a head start on his academic studies. The extra year paid off as Johnson won the IJGT Clemson Invitational with 69-73 and signed with GW in April of 2003. He recorded five top 10 finishes and five more top 20s in 15 IJGT events in 2003-04.
Johnson's highlights include a third-place finish at the Links at Shirley with 153 and sixth-place finishes at the Sandpiper and Westfields stops on the tour. He placed 15th and 16th, respectively, at the 2001 and 2002 Massachusetts State Juniors. He won the 2002 New England region qualifier for the U.S. Junior Amateur shooting 69-71 to earn a trip to the U.S. Junior at the Atlanta Athletic Club. Johnson also has experience in AJGA and FCWT events. Recently, he shot 71-79 to get into a playoff for the U.S. Amateur Public Links. He birdied the first playoff hole to qualify for his second USGA event and become the first GW golfer since Ryan Day in 2001 to qualify for the Pub Links.
Tapia represents the latest in a long line of successful international golfers at GW. The 2004-05 Colonials will likely have four foreign nationals on their 11-man squad. Tapia is currently the top-ranked junior in Panama and one of the top prospects from Central America this year. He has represented Panama in many international events including the 2002 Callaway World Junior at Torrey Pines where he finished in the middle of the pack and 11th out of the 25 Latin Americans in the field. Tapia finished third in the 2004 Central American Championships in Costa Rica. At Avon Old Farms School in Connecticut, Alvaro played number one on one of the top Prep school teams in New England. He was team captain and team MVP on a team that went 19-3 in 2004.
The Colonials open their season Sept. 11-12 in the 36-hole U.S. Naval Academy Fall Invitational at Annapolis, MD.
