WASHINGTON, DC - George Washington's men's basketball team received an opening round bye in the Atlantic 10 Tournament as a result of their 11-5 league mark (17-10 overall) and finishing second in the A-10's West division. They will start their tournament on Thursday, March 11 at 2:00 pm, when they face the winner of the La Salle-Rhode Island game being played on Wednesday, March 10 at approximately 2:30 pm.
GW faired very well against both La Salle (10-19, 5-11) and Rhode Island (18-12, 7-9) this season, going 3-0 against the two teams. The Colonials beat La Salle, 74-57 on January 17 in a game that saw freshman J.R. Pinnock go off for 21 points. The Colonials completed the season sweep last Saturday, leaving Philadelphia with an 87-72 victory.
The Colonials won their only match up with Rhode Island this season, an 84-72 victory at Smith Center on February 7. Pops Mensah-Bonsu led the way with 25 points in just 24 minutes of action versus the Rams.
If the Colonials can advance to the semifinals, they will most likely face undefeated Saint Joseph's (27-0, 16-0), who will have to get by the winner of Xavier (19-10, 10-6) and St. Bonaventure (7-20, 3-13).
Semifinal round play takes place on Friday, March 12, beginning at 7:05pm. The final round of the Atlantic 10 Championship will be played on Saturday, March 13. Tip-off is 6:05pm.
Tickets for the opening round Atlantic 10 Men's Basketball Championship can be purchased at the UD Arena box office or by calling 937-229-4433.
