WASHINGTON, DC - George Washington freshman shortstop Tom Shanley (Stanfordville, NY/Pine Plains) has been named to the Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America Team, Collegiate Baseball has announced. Shanley has received repeated recognition for his outstanding rookie campaign where he led the Atlantic 10 in batting average and was named the A-10 Rookie of the Year.
Shanley's four Rookie of the Week awards tied with Richmond's Ben Zeskind for the most in a single season since the inception of the weekly honor in 1996. Zeskind was the only other Atlantic 10 player named to the Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American Team. Shanley's list of accolades this year also include Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) All-Stars Second Team and Atlantic 10 All-Conference Second Team.
Shanley's .398 batting average is the 43rd highest this year in Division I College Baseball. The freshman shortstop started his collegiate career with a 15-game hitting streak. He was GW's team leader in runs (48) and on-base percentage (.475) while collecting 74 hits, second for the 2003 Colonials squad. In the Atlantic 10, Shanley led the league in batting average, finished tied for second in runs, and earned third place in hits and on-base percentage.
