WASHINGTON, DC - Point guard Carl Elliott (Brooklyn, NY/Worcester Academy) has signed a National Letter-of-Intent with The George Washington University, head basketball coach Karl Hobbs has announced. He is GW's second signee for 2003-04 joining Ricky Lucas.
The 6-foot-4, 215-pound post-graduate student averaged 17.2 points, 6.1 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 2.1 steals under coach Mo Cassara at Worcester Academy in Worcester, MA. He led the Hilltoppers to the New England Prep School Athletic Association (NEPSAA) Championship and was named MVP of the tournament after totalling 50 points in the final two games. Worcester posted a 25-4 record last season. "Carl is a very dynamic and versatile player," Cassara said. "He can play every position and is very college-ready to play basketball. He has been a pleasure to coach."
As a senior at Trinity-Pawling High School, he averaged 15 points, eight assists, six steals and four rebounds per game while shooting 83 percent from the free throw line. In addition to his basketball prowess, Elliott also was a standout wide receiver and a running back for the Pride as well as a sprinter for the track team at Trinity-Pawling. The Pride posted a record of 20-3 (.869) during Elliott's senior season under coach Bill Casson. The Pride finished third in the Class B Division of the NEPSAA.
"Carl is a terrific point guard," Hobbs said. "He has a chance to be a very special player with the ability to score and the size to see over defenses. He is an exceptional passer, as a good as passer as I've seen on the high school level. He'll bring size, court awareness and maturity to the team."
Elliott was named the Player of the Year and to the All-Tri-State League team as a senior in a vote by the league coaches. He also earned all-league honors for football. Rob Kennedy, President of Hoop Group, calls Elliott "one of the two or three top unsigned high school guards on the east coast." In July, 2001, Elliott was named the MVP of Hoop Group's Eastern Invitational basketball camp.
Russ Blake, recruiting analyst for RivalsHoops.com said Elliott is a "physical, tough floor general who looks to get his teammates involved. He is a basketball player with a football mentality who can play fast or slow so he has great versatility."
