GW Softball Receives Four Early Commitments

WASHINGTON, DC - The George Washington University softball team has received commitments from four players, announced head coach Shaunte' Fremin on Monday, December 1. The four players who will join the Colonials are Lindsay Graham (Palm Bay, FL/Eau Gallie), Cat Belanger (Monterey, CA/Santa Catalina), Katie Miller (Manteo, NC/Manteo) and Jennifer George (Silver Spring, MD/Springbrook).
"This group has a chance to have a major impact and each one could start as a freshman," said Fremin. "The best part is not only are they great softball players, but they are also great in the classroom."
Graham, the central Florida Player of the Year, comes from Olympian Dot Richardson's ASA program and should bring a strong bat to the Colonials. She hit .400 for her high school team and was impressive on the mound as well, establishing a .78 ERA as a sophomore. She was named to the All-State second team, the Cape Coast Conference first team and the Space Coast Conference first team in 2001. Coach Fremin is expecting her to help solidify the pitching staff while also seeing time at third base.
Belanger can do it all, according to Coach Fremin. The speedster out of California will handle the duties at second base while wreaking havoc on the base paths. She had a .606 on-base percentage last season while batting .417. Her speed helped her to 15 steals and 20 runs scored during 2003. Belanger has gained some seasoning playing for one of the best ASA teams in the Salinas Storm and should be able to transfer her game quickly to the collegiate level.
Miller could be the pitcher the coaching staff has been looking for to help lead the Colonials to an Atlantic 10 Championship. She's been through the battles in North Carolina and was voted the AAA High School MVP and pitcher of the year, all while securing her place as the class valedictorian. Coach Fremin is enthusiastic about adding her to a deepening pitching staff.
George, a local product, should help solidify the catching position for the Colonials. Coach Fremin expects her to be solid behind the plate to anchor the defense, while being opportunistic at the plate as a switch-hitter.
The Colonials will open their 2004 season when they host the GW Invitational on Saturday and Sunday, February 28 and 29.
