WASHINGTON, DC - Senior Chris Monroe (Hyattsville, MD/Good Counsel) has been named the Atlantic 10 Conference co-Player of the Week for men's basketball, the league office has announced. He shares this week's honor with Xavier's David West.
Monroe, a 6-foot-3, 215-pound shooting guard, averaged 27.5 points and 3.5 rebounds in two games this past week. He scored a game-high 27 points with five rebounds in George Washington's 63-57 loss at Richmond on Jan. 21. He also had 28 points, including the 2,000th point of his career, in GW's 75-70 loss to Massachusetts Saturday. He became just the second Colonial in the 88-year history of GW basketball to reach the 2,000-point plateau. He is just the eighth Atlantic 10 player to reach the milestone and he is 223 points shy of becoming the school's all-time leading scorer.
Monroe's statistics for the week: two games, 55 points (27.5 ppg) on 19-34 FGs (.559 FG%), 6-13 from three-point range (.462 3FG%), 11-15 FTs (.733 FT%), seven rebounds, four assists and two steals.
The Colonials' team captain, Monroe has scored in double figures in 30 consecutive games and has 92 double-figure scoring games in 105 career games. He leads the league in scoring with 21.4 points per game.
GW (6-10, 0-5) next plays Saint Joseph's (14-2, 5-1) this Wednesday, Jan. 29, in a 7:30 p.m. game at Smith Center. The game will be broadcast locally on WAGE AM 1200 and WMET AM 1150 and worldwide via www.GWsports.com.
