WASHINGTON, DC (March 29, 2002) - The Colonials held off the Saint Mary's College Gaels in a see-saw battle today at the Mount Vernon Athletic Complex to notch their third victory of the season, 6-5.
After falling behind early in the first half, 1-0, the Colonials (3-4, 0--2) scored two-straight goals to take the lead. Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week, freshman Heidi Mayer (Havertown, PA/Haverford HS) netted a quick pass from senior Nadia Kachwaha (Amherst, MA/Amherst HS) for her 12th goal of the season at 15:20.
Junior Jacqueline Arfaa (Bel Air, MD/John Carroll HS) added the Colonials' second score with 9:02 left in the half when she split SMC's defense to put away a running shot past Gaels' goalkeeper Megan Ceccotti.
GW carried their first half momentum through to the second half, scoring 56 seconds into the period when freshman Megan McDonough (Sherwood Forest, MD/Archbishop HS) put away her seventh goal of the season, giving the Colonials a 3-1 lead.
The Gaels would quickly strike back with two goals in 45 seconds. SMC's Alli Bock put a breakaway goal past freshman keeper Casey Atkins (Concord, MA/Concord Carlisle HS) at 28:13. The Gaels would add another goal just 45 seconds later when Colette Spencer scored her second goal of the game, to tie the game, 3-3.
Arfaa regained the lead for the Colonials just four minutes later when she scored her second goal of the game at 23:37. SMC would tie the game for the third time when Liz Roberts netted her first of two goals, knotting the game at 4-4.
GW took the lead for good when freshman Meghan McDonough (Annapolis, MD/Annapolis HS) converted a pinpoint pass from fellow freshman Jenny Heisler (Shaker Heights, OH/Shaker Heights) with 13:00 left in the game. Another goal four minutes later from freshman Becca Valle (Ellicott City, MD/Wilde Lake HS) off a pass from Mayer would give GW a two-goal edge, 6-4.
The Gaels would add one more score to pull within one goal, but the Colonials' defense held SMC scoreless for the remainder of the game, giving GW the victory. Atkins had a stellar game, recording 13 saves and only allowing five goals on 30 SMC shots.
The Colonials return to action tomorrow, March 30, when they take on California in a 3:00 p.m. game at the GW Mount Vernon Athletic Complex.
