WASHINGTON, DC (Sept. 26) - The George Washington University golf program will host the second annual Rehoboth Beach Invitational on Monday, October 1, at Kings Creek Country Club in Rehoboth Beach, DE. Kings Creek has hosted the 1996 ECAC Championship, the 2000 Delaware State Open, and the 2001 Williamson Cup on the 6,600-yard, par-72 course.
The event will be contested over 36 holes with an 8:00 a.m. shotgun start and a 1:30 p.m. shotgun start. The event features a very diverse field. Teams from as far away as Hamilton, NY, and from as near by as Dover, DE, will compete. Three teams that have participated in recent NCAA tournaments highlight the field. Iona College will be back to defend their title from 2000. The Gaels also won the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship in 2000 and 2001 and participated in the 2000 and 2001 NCAA Championships. Back-to-back Patriot League Champions and NCAA participants, Navy will cross the Bay Bridge and play in the event for the first time. Other favorites include the University of Maryland which competes in the Atlantic Coast Conference and qualified for the NCAA Championship in 1999 and 2000 runner-up and host George Washington University. The Colonials return four of five starters from last year's squad. Other teams to watch are the American, Villanova and Colgate which recently finished third at the Colgate-Cornell Invitational. Of local interest, the University of Delaware and their new coach, Mike Keough, and two-time Division III Championship participant, Wesley College (from nearby Dover, DE) will try to keep the title in the state.
Spectators are welcome and are encouraged to check in at the Kings Creek pro shop for a tournament package with rosters and pairings. Contact GW Head Coach, Scott Allen (202-994-5969), or Sports Information Director, Brad Bower (202-994-6654) for more information.
