Baseball Falls To Terps, 11-8
Washington, DC (May 9, 2001) - Maryland third baseman Steve Oursler went five for five with five RBI's to help lead the Terrapins to an 11-8 victory over GW at the University of Maryland. The loss drops the Colonials record to 34-20 on the season.
GW jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second on doubles by junior Mike Bassett (Paramus, NJ/ Paramus) and senior Tony Brown (Hockessin, DE/ A.I. DuPont).
The Terps scored two runs in the second off of GW starter Ron Christie (Lincroft, NJ/ Middletown H.S. South) to take a 2-1 lead. Christie lasted four and a third innings allowing six runs on ten hits while striking out four.
GW tied the game at two in the top of third on an RBI single by sophomore Tony Dokoupil (Severna Park, MD/ Severna Park), but the Terps responded with a run in the bottom of the inning to regain the lead, 3-2.
The Colonials took the lead in the top of the fifth on an RBI double by sophomore Jake Wald (Alexandria, VA/ T.C. Williams), a groundout by Dokoupil and an RBI single by junior Matt Krimmel (Schnecksville, PA/ Parkland). However, the Terps again responded, this time with three runs of their own to regain the lead, 6-5.
The Colonials scored two runs in the top of the sixth to take a 7-6 lead, but Maryland scored two runs off of GW reliever Glen Skutnik (Lorton, VA/ Hayfield) to take the lead for good, 8-7.
The Terrapins then added three more runs in the bottom of the eighth to increase the lead to 11-7 before GW got a run in the ninth on an RBI single by senior Dan Rouhier (McLean, VA/ St. Alban's) to complete the scoring.
GW completes their regular season on Friday, May 11, as they play a doubleheader against Morehead State in Kentucky beginning at 1:00 p.m.
