Baseball Tames Tigers, 9-4
Washington, D.C. (May 8, 2001) -Junior Mike Bassett (Paramus, NJ/ Paramus) had a home run and five RBI's to lead George Washington to a 9-4 victory over visiting Towson, this afternoon, May 8, at Barcroft Park in Arlington, VA. With the victory the Colonials improved to 34-19 on the season while the Tigers fell to 32-19.
GW took an early lead in the bottom of the first inning as senior tri-captain Dan Rouhier (McLean, VA/ St. Alban's) hit his 10th home run of the season to make it 2-0.
Bassett and the Colonials extended the lead to 4-0 in the third inning. After redshirt junior Travis Crowder (Manassas, VA/ Osbourn) reached on an error to lead off the inning and Rouhier walked, a wild pitch allowed them to advance a base and Bassett came through with a two-run single.
The score remained that way until the top of the sixth when the Tigers rallied. Towson got on the board courtesy of a sacrifice fly by third baseman Scott Bacon. Then, RBI singles by Jimmy Kittelberger and Mike Costello cut the GW lead to 4-3.
The Colonials responded with two more run in the bottom of the inning when senior Ross Smirne (Fleetville, PA/ Lackawanna Trail) doubled home senior Tony Brown (Hockessin, DE/ A.I. DuPont) and sophomore Chris Barry (Orchard Park, NY/ Canisius) to make it 6-3.
Bassett added a three-run home run in the seventh to make it 9-3, before Towson added a run in the eighth to complete the scoring.
Junior Mike O'Connor (Ellicott City, MD/ Mt. St. Joseph's) pitched six strong innings to pick up his first victory of the season for GW. O'Connor allowed three runs on five hits while striking out two. Jason Summerlin suffered the loss for Towson.
GW returns to action tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m., as they travel to College Park, MD to take on the Maryland Terrapins. The Colonials complete their regular season schedule with a doubleheader at Morehead State on Friday, May 11, beginning at 1:00 p.m. Morehead State and GW agreed to cancel the third game of the series, which was scheduled for Saturday, May 12.
