UMass Wins Battle With Baseball, 7-6
Washington, D.C. (May 6, 2001) - Right fielder Gavin Clark's RBI single in the top of the ninth inning broke a 6-6 tie and completed a three-run comeback as the Minutemen held on to defeat GW, 7-6, this afternoon, May 6, at Barcroft Park. The Colonials fell to 33-19 overall and 13-9 in the Atlantic 10 while the Minutemen improved to 20-17 overall and 10-6 in the Atlantic 10.
UMass jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the third on an RBI double by centerfielder Nick Gorneault. The Colonials responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 2-1 lead. Junior Matt Krimmel (Schnecksville, PA/ Parkland) singled home redshirt junior Travis Crowder (Manassas, VA/ Osbourn) to tie the game at one and junior Mike Bassett (Paramus, NJ/ Paramus) singled home sophomore Tony Dokoupil (Severna Park, MD/ Severna Park) to break the tie.
UMass scored single runs in the fourth and fifth to take a 3-2 lead on GW starter Glen Skutnik (Lorton, VA/ Hayfield). Skutnik pitched into the seventh inning and gave the Colonials a chance to win. He allowed four runs on eight hits while striking out six without walking a batter.
GW reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run home run by Bassett, but UMass answered with a run in the sixth to tie the game once again.
With the score tied at four in the bottom of the seventh, sophomore Chris Barry (Orchard Park, NY/ Canisius) came through with a two out, two-run single to put the Colonials ahead, 6-4.
The Colonials looked like they were going to work out of a jam in the eighth, but a two out error with the bases loaded allowed two runs to score and the game was tied once again, 6-6.
In the ninth, Gorneault drew a leadoff walk and came around to score two batters later on Clark's single up the middle to put the Minutemen ahead to stay.
The loss means GW must receive some help from others in the conference in order to qualify for the Atlantic 10 Tournament beginning on May 17.
