Washington, D.C. (May 3, 2001) - GW scored in six of the seven innings to defeat Howard, 20-6, this afternoon, May 3, at Joe Cannon Stadium. The game was called after the seventh inning due to the ten run mercy rule. With the victory the Colonials improved to 32-17 on the season.
GW scored a single run in the first on an RBI double by senior Dan Rouhier (McLean, VA/ St. Alban's) to take an early 1-0 lead, but that was only the beginning for GW.
The Colonials scored five more runs in the third to start a string of five consecutive run scoring innings. Junior Mike Bassett (Paramus, NJ/Paramus) had the big blow of the inning when he hit a grand slam to left to make it 5-0.
GW added three in the fourth, two in the fifth, six in the sixth and three more in the seventh before the ten-run mercy rule became effective.
Bassett went two for five with six RBI's, sophomore Chris Barry (Orchard Park, NY/ Canisius) went three for five with a home run and four RBI's and freshman Jeff Fertitta (Baltimore, MD/ Loyola Blakefield) went two for three with two runs scored and two RBI's to lead the offensive outburst.
Freshman David Rodriguez (Valley Stream, NY/ Long Island Lutheran) pitched six innings to pick up his third victory of the season. Rodriguez allowed three earned runs on seven hits and struck out six.
The Colonials return to Atlantic 10 play this weekend with a key three-game series against Massachusetts. A sweep of the Minutemen would all but lock up a spot in the Atlantic 10 Tournament for the Colonials.
