Washington, D.C. (May 2, 2001) - Senior Dan Rouhier (McLean, VA/ St. Alban's) hit his eighth home run of the season and senior Ron Christie (Lincroft, NJ/ Middletown H.S. South) pitched six innings of five hit ball to lead GW past Mount St. Mary's, 8-0, this afternoon, May 2, at Barcroft Park. The Colonials improved to 31-17 on the season while Mount St. Mary's fell to 12-35.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the third when Rouhier and the Colonials jumped out to a 3-0 lead. After senior Nick Iovacchini (Asheville, NC/ Asheville) reached on an error, sophomore Tony Dokoupil (Severna Park, MD/ Severna Park) singled to put runners at first and second. Two batters later Rouhier homered to right center to give the Colonials the lead.
GW added single runs in the fourth and fifth on a sacrifice fly by Dokoupil and an RBI single by freshman Josh Courage (Bethesda, MD/ Washington Waldorf) to push the lead to 5-0.
The Colonials then added three more runs in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Rouhier and a two-run double by junior Mike Bassett (Paramus, NJ/ Paramus) to make it 8-0.
That was more than enough offense for Christie, who improved to 6-1 on the season and lowered his ERA to 4.62. Sophomore Glen Skutnik (Lorton, VA/ Hayfield), junior Chris Worth (North Arlington, NJ/ N. Arlington) and senior Bryan Beggs (Somerset, PA/ Somerset) all pitch one inning of relief to complete the shutout.
The Colonials return to action tomorrow afternoon, May 3, against Howard at Joe Cannon Stadium. The first pitch is at 3:00 p.m.
