Five Colonials Named Atlantic 10 Baseball All-Conference Bassett and Beggs Named to First-Team, Krimmel, Wald and Conden Named to Second-Team
WASHINGTON, DC (May 16, 2001) - George Washington University senior pitcher Bryan Beggs (Somerset, PA/ Somerset) and junior outfielder Mike Bassett (Paramus, NJ/ Paramus) have been named to the 2001 Atlantic 10 Baseball All-Conference Team in voting conducted among the Conference's head coaches. Junior tri-captain Matt Krimmel (Schnecksville, PA/ Parkland) and sophomores Jake Wald (Alexandria, VA/ T.C. Williams) and Greg Conden (Owego, NY/ Owego Free Academy) were named to the Atlantic 10 Second-Team. GW had the most players on the two squads (five) of any school in the Conference.
Beggs, a tri-captain and the teams "closer", led the Atlantic 10 with nine saves and struck out 29 batters in 31 innings while compiling a 3.13 ERA. He became the all-time leader in appearances at GW April 1 against Duquesne. Beggs has now appeared in 90 games during his GW career.
Bassett led the Atlantic 10 with 57 RBIs and tied for the A-10 lead in home runs with 14. He also hit .317 and had 14 doubles this season. He now ranks second on the all-time GW home run list with 43.
Krimmel, the Colonials' MVP who plays both third and first base, led the Atlantic 10 with 72 hits and was sixth in the league with a .373 batting average. Wald batted .340 with four home runs and 34 RBIs while anchoring the Colonials infield at shortstop. A righthanded pitcher, Conden tied for second in the Atlantic 10 with eight victories and was fifth in the Conference with a 3.84 ERA.
Conden will be on the mound tomorrow (May 17) when the fourth-seeded Colonials (35-21, 13-9) face the top-seeded Massachusetts Minutemen (26-17, 16-6) in the opening round of the 2001 Verizon Atlantic 10 Tournament at Lake Buena Vista, FL.
