Baseball Splits With Rhode Island

Washington D.C. (April 28, 2001)-- Junior Jason Baker (Accokeek, MD/ DeMatha) pitched a complete game shutout in game two to help the Colonials salvage a split with Rhode Island, 9-0, this afternoon, April 28, at Bill Beck Field in Kingston, RI. The Rams won game one, 4-3, on a bases loaded suicide squeeze play in the bottom of the seventh inning. With the split, the Colonials moved their record to 29-17 overall and 11-7 in the Atlantic 10, while the Rams moved to 23-20 overall and 6-9 in the Atlantic 10.
In game one, the Rams got on the board in the bottom of the first when catcher Mike Schiappa hit a sacrifice fly off of GW starter Greg Conden (Owego, NY/ Owego Free Academy)
The Colonials tied the game in the top of the second on an error by the Rams. GW took a 2-1 lead in the fifth courtesy of an RBI double by sophomore Tony Dokoupil (Severna Park, MD/ Severna Park).
The Rams tied the game in the bottom of the fifth, but the Colonials regained the lead in the top of the sixth on an RBI single by sophomore Jake Wald (Alexandria, VA/ T.C. Williams).
The Rams once again tied the game when Schiappa hit a solo home run off of Conden in the bottom of the sixth. In the seventh, the Rams loaded the bases with one out and third baseman Justin Lamboy laid down a suicide squeeze to score right fielder John Maloney with the winning run.
Conden suffered the loss despite pitching six and a third innings allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out three.
In game two, Baker once pitched a fabulous game. The junior allowed four hits and struck out six to pick up his sixth win of the season. Baker had plenty of help from his teammates at the plate. The Colonials scored four runs in the first, two in the second and two more in the fourth to taking a commanding 8-0 lead and Baker did the rest. Redshirt sophomore Travis Crowder (Manassas, VA/ Osbourn) went three for three with four runs scored while junior Mike Bassett (Paramus, NJ/ Paramus) went two for four with one run scored and an RBI.
The two teams wrap-up the three-game series tomorrow afternoon at Bill Beck Field. Junior Mike O?Connor (Ellicott City, MD/ Mt. St. Joseph?s) is scheduled to get the start for GW
