Baseball Hangs On To Defeat George Mason, 6-5

Washington, D.C. - Senior Dan Rouhier (McLean, VA/ St. Alban's) had four RBI's, including a three-run home run in the third, and freshman Jeff Fertitta (Baltimore, MD/ Loyola Blakefield) hit his first career home run to lead GW past George Mason, 6-5, this afternoon at Barcroft Park. The victory pushed GW's record to 27-16 on the season while George Mason fell to 17-26.
The Patriots got single runs in the first three innings against GW starter Ron Christie (Lincroft, NJ/ Middletown H.S. South) to take a 3-0 lead, but the Colonials took the lead for good with a four run third. With two outs, senior Nick Iovacchini (Asheville, NC/ Asheville) singled to start things off. After a walk to sophomore Tony Dokoupil (Severna Park, MD/ Severna Park) put runners at first and second, junior Matt Krimmel (Schnecksville, PA/ Parkland) took advantage of a Patriots wild pitch to knock in his 34th RBI of the year to make it 3-1. Rouhier followed with his seventh home run of the year to put the Colonials up 4-3.
In the fourth, Fertitta homered to straight away center field for his first career home run to make it 5-3. Rouhier added to the lead in the fifth with an RBI groundout. It was the 171st RBI of Rouhier's career, tying him with Joe Beichart ('99) for first on the all-time RBI list at GW. Rouhier had an opportunity to break the record in the seventh, but the senior tri-captain popped up to short.
Senior Bryan Beggs (Somerset, PA/ Somerset) came on in the ninth and allowed a two-run home run to make it 6-5, but Beggs got the last out to pick up his Atlantic 10 leading eighth save of the season and preserve Christie's fifth win of the season.
The Colonials return to action tomorrow afternoon, April 25, as they take on the University of Maryland-Baltimore County beginning at 3:00 p.m. Sophomore Glen Skutnik (4-3, 3.60 ERA) will get the start for GW.
