In game one, Powell and GW starter Jason Baker (Accokeek, MD/ DeMatha) engaged in a pitcher?s duel. The Owls got single runs off of Baker, who fell to 5-3 on the season, in the first, third and fifth. The Colonials had rallies in the first and seventh, but a diving catch by Owl leftfielder Keith Ramsey stranded two Colonial runners in the first and Powell worked out of a two-on one out situation in the seventh, getting sophomore Jake Wald (Alexandria, VA/ T.C. Williams) on a pop up and sophomore Chris Barry (Orchard Park, NY/ Canisius) on a grounder to short. The Colonials were only able to muster five hits against Powell after scoring 38 runs in their previous two games.
In game two, GW took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning on an error by the Owls and an RBI single by Barry. The Owls got a run back in the bottom of the inning and then exploded for seven runs in the second. After a Colonial miscue allowed the Owls to stay alive, the Owls hit four home runs off of GW starter Glen Skutnik (Lorton, VA/ Hayfield) to take an 8-2 lead.
The Colonials got a run in the third on a wild pitch to make it 8-3. In the fourth, sophomore Tony Dokoupil (Severna Park, MD/ Severna Park) hit his fifth home run of the year to cut the Owl lead to 8-4. The Colonials continued to cut into the lead by scoring two more runs in the fifth. Senior Dan Rouhier (McLean, VA/ St. Alban?s) homered to lead off the inning and Barry followed a few batters later with a home run of his own to make it 8-6, but that is as close as GW would get as the Owls scored a run in the bottom of the sixth and shut the Colonials out in the seventh to walk away with the sweep.
GW returns to Barcroft Park to face LaSalle (9-24, 6-8 Atlantic 10) in a doubleheader on Sunday, April 22, at 12:00 p.m. Sophomore Greg Conden (Owego, NY/ Owego Free Academy) will pitch the first game and junior Chris Worth (North Arlington, NJ/ N. Arlington) will pitch the second game.
