Washington, D.C. (April 18, 2001) - The Colonials scored a season high 22 runs on 18 hits to overwhelm Towson, 22-4, this afternoon at Schuerholz Park on the campus of Towson University. The Colonials have now scored 38 runs in their past two games. With the win, GW improved to 24-14 on the season while Towson fell to 23-11.
Senior tri-captain Dan Rouhier (McLean, VA/ St. Alban?s), who has 10 RBI?s in his last two games, helped lead the way by going two for six with six RBI?s and a home run. Rouhier had plenty of help though, as junior tri-captain Matt Krimmel (Schnecksville, PA/ Parkland), sophomore Chris Barry (Orchard Park, NY/ Canisius), sophomore Jake Wald (Alexandria, VA/ T.C. Williams) and freshman Jeff Fertitta (Baltimore, MD/ Loyola Blakefield) all had three RBI?s for the Colonials
The Colonials jumped out to a big lead right from the start, scoring nine runs in the first two innings to take a 9-0 lead. Towson scored three runs in the third to make it 9-3 and the score remained that way until the seventh. In that inning, GW scored seven runs on seven hits, including a three-run home run by Barry, to make the score 16-3. However, GW was not done there. The Colonials added six more runs in the ninth to make it 22-3 and hand Towson their worst lost since March 22, 2000 against North Carolina.
The Colonials bats are heating up as they head into the stretch run. After disposing of Towson and Navy in their past two games, the team looks to move into first place in the Atlantic 10 this weekend with a pair of key doubleheaders. On Friday, the Colonials head to Philadelphia to take on first-place Temple, in what have become the biggest games of the season so far. The Colonials then return home on Sunday to take on the LaSalle Explorers beginning at 12:00 p.m. Junior Jason Baker (Accokeek, MD/ DeMatha), 5-2 with a 2.29 ERA, will get the start in game one against Temple while sophomore Glen Skutnik (Lorton, VA/ Hayfield), 4-2 with a 3.54 ERA, will get the start in game two.
