WASHINGTON, DC (Nov. 26, 2001) - The George Washington University baseball team has signed four student-athletes to National Letters of Intent for the 2003 season, head baseball coach Tom Walter announced today. With the four additions joining the team, coach Walter has added depth to a team that will see seven seniors depart after the 2002 season.
The four student-athletes are:
Paul Garner, OF/RHP, 6-1, 185, Mandeville, LA/Mandeville H.S.
"Paul is the first real two-way player we have had at GW in a long time. He should hit in the middle of our lineup and pitch out of the bullpen for us as a freshman. He has power potential at the plate and possesses a tremendous arm. On the mound, Paul pitches in the high 80's/low 90's with good feel for his breaking pitches." Walter said.
Daniel Pfau, LHP, 6-1, 155, Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central H.S.
"We feel that Danny can give us quality innings as a freshman. He throws between 85-87 with sink and late break. He also possesses two other quality pitches. Danny has a tremendous future and we are looking forward to his arrival on campus." Walter said.
Thomas Shanley, IF, 5-9, 175, Pine Plains, NY/Stissing Mountain H.S.
"Tom is a hard nosed player who shows up everyday ready to play. He will step into our program and make a big difference in our approach to playing the game. He's an above average baserunner who can play three infield positions and has tremendous instincts." Walter said.
Josh Wilkie, RHP, 6-1, 180, Alpharetta, GA/Chattahoochee H.S.
"Josh is a fantastic pitching prospect who will have a tremendous impact on GW baseball. He has outstanding command of all three pitches and throws them in any count. Josh's mound presence is what could make him a special pitcher." Walter said.
The Colonials posted a school-record 38 victories and came within one game of qualifying for the NCAA Tournament last season. The team opens the 2002 season on Tuesday, February 12 at Norfolk State.
