Volleyball Blocked by UMass, 3-1

WASHINGTON, DC (Nov. 2) - Sophomore Ruth Lazzari (Seal Beach, CA) pounded her career-high 24 kills and hit .377 but it wasn't enough as Massachusetts blocked 11 GW attacks and won in four, 34-32, 30-27, 23-30, 30-26, Friday night at GW's Smith Center. It was GW's first loss in its last three outings and second loss of the season to UMass.
Sophomore setter Lauren Dunning (Stockton, CA) posted match-highs with 52 assists and 23 digs whille hitting .364 in the two-hour, 10-minute match. Sophomore Sarah Hokom (Caldwell, ID) added 17 kills, 11 digs and four block assists.
The Minutewomen jumped out to a 6-0 lead in game one and appeared to be headed to an easy victory before GW scored six straight points late to take a 29-27 advantage. The teams tied at 30 and 32 before a pair of attack errors by Hokom gave UMass the 34-32 victory.
Game two was tightly played all the way to a 25-25 tie before a pair of Janeen DeMarte kills and one by Lymarie Llovet puch UMass over the top. Game three was tied at 13-13 before GW took control and coasted to the victory. Game four was tied at 17-17 and was a one-point game with UMass leading 27-26 before a Britta Stroman attack error and a pair of Llovet kills sealed the match for the Minutewomen.
Both teams hit .167 but UMass totalled 11 total blocks to four for GW.
UMass (13-11, 6-8 A-10) was led by Nitia Small's 18 kills with nine block assists and Llovet's 15 kills and 14 digs.
GW (6-14, 5-7 A-10) hosts Rhode Island Saturday night in an Atlantic 10 match beginning at 7:00 p.m.
