WASHINGTON, DC (Nov. 3) - Sophomore Laura Harrison (West Hills, CA) led GW with 10 kills and blocked a pair of attacks but visiting Rhode Island swept the Colonials, 30-28, 30-21, 30-21, in a one-hour, 30-minute match Saturday night at GW's Smith Center.
The teams played game one closely with neither team leading by more than four points throughout. Kills by URI's Yoland Bogacz and Juliana Valencia sandwiched around a Ruth Lazzari (Seal Beach, CA) kill ended game one.
Game two saw URI go out to a 5-1 lead before the Colonials battled back to tie at 7-7. The Rams scored 13 of the next 18 points to take a commanding 20-12 lead and breeze the rest of the way. Game three also was close at 20-17 before the Rams outscored the Colonials 8-3 and won easily. The Rams hit .308 in game three compared to .083 for GW.
Freshman Britta Stroman (Richfield, MN) contributed nine kills while hitting a team-best .261.
Rhode Island (14-9, 10-3 A-10) was led by Brooke Ecklund's 15 kills and Valencia's 17 digs and 34 assists.
GW (6-15, 5-8 A-10) travels to Dayton Friday night for an Atlantic 10 match beginning at 6:30 p.m. followed by a match at Xavier Saturday at 7:00.
