Duquesne Passes GW, 3-2

WASHINGTON, DC (Oct. 19) - Duquesne hit .375 in the decisive fifth game to close out the Colonials, 15-7, and defeat GW in volleyball for the first time in that last six meetings between the schools. Sherene Lemonias led the Dukes with a team-high 17 kills as Duquesne won, 29-31, 30-21, 21-30, 30-21, 15-7, Friday night at GW's Smith Center. The match sent the struggling Colonials to their sixth straight loss.
GW took game one in a closely-played match where neither team led by more than five points. Duquesne rushed out to a 7-0 lead in game two and maintained a comfortable margin throughout. GW took charge in game three at the outset with a 7-2 lead. Duquesne rallied to within four several times but could get no closer. Game four saw the Dukes take a 9-3 lead en route to the 30-21 victory while committing just two attack errors with 18 kills for a .364 percentage.
Game five was all Dukes as the visitors led 7-1 before GW got untracked. The Colonials cut the deficit to five but committed seven attack errors allowing the Dukes to breeze.
Freshman Molly Law (Denver, CO) led a trio of Colonials with double-double performances with her match-high 18 kills to go with 18 digs for a .255 percentage and a pair of block assists. Sophomore Sarah Hokom (Caldwell, ID) had a team-high 20 digs and 17 kills as did Ruth Lazzari (Seal Beach, CA) who matched Hokom's 17 kills.
Lauren Dunning (Stockton, CA) assisted on 60 kills and added 17 digs.
Duquesne (12-6, 5-4 A-10) had four players post double-doubles led by Lemonias' 17 kills and 14 digs. Brooke Saunders (14 kills, match-high 21 digs), Sarah Morrow (15 kills, 10 digs) and Jacqui Gerlach (13 kills, 10 digs).
GW (4-12, 3-6 A-10) plays Georgetown Saturday night at McDonough Gym in a 7:00 p.m. match.
