WASHINGTON, DC (January 10, 2001) - The George Washington University baseball team has been chosen by Collegiate Baseball to win the Atlantic 10 West Division in 2001. In it's January 5th Baseball Preview, the magazine projected the Colonials ahead of Xavier and Duquesne in the West Division and Massachusetts ahead of St. Bonaventure and Rhode Island in the East Division.
Also in the preview issue, sophomore Greg Conden (Owego, NY/Owego Free Academy) was projected as the Pitcher of the Year in the Atlantic 10. Conden is coming off of a dominating freshman campaign in which he went 9-2 with a 3.26 ERA. He was named Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Year, Rookie of the Year and Freshman All-America. Conden will lead a deep pitching staff that includes highly touted newcomer, Jason Baker (Accokeek, MD/DeMatha H.S.).
Senior Dan Rouhier (McLean, VA/O'Connell) and junior Mike Bassett (Paramus, NJ/Paramus H.S.) were listed as players to watch in the Atlantic 10 this year. The powerful duo will form the nucleus of a strong lineup for the Colonials that also includes, junior Matt Krimmel (Schnecksville, PA/Parkland H.S.) and newcomers Ross Smirne (Fleetville, PA/Lackawanna Trail H.S.) and Jeff Fertitta (Baltimore, MD/Loyola Blakefield H.S.).
The Colonials open the 2001 season with a three-game series on Saturday, February 17 at UNC-Wilmington.
