Baseball Defeats Maryland 4-2

WASHINGTON, DC (May 9) - The George Washington baseball team defeated the University of Maryland 4-2 at Shipley Field in College Park, MD to improve their record to 33-19 on the season. The win ties the school record for the most wins in a season, which was previously set in 1998.
The Colonials got a strong performance from freshman Greg Conden (Owego, NY/Owego Free Academy) on the mound and took advantage of two Maryland errors to score three unearned runs to defeat the Terrapins.
The Colonials broke a scoreless tie in the fifth when sophomore Matt Krimmel (Schnecksville, PA/Parkland) scored on a throwing error by Maryland's center fielder after he had stolen second base and was trying to advance third base on a wild throw by the catcher.
The Colonials added two more in the sixth to take a 3-0 lead. Freshman Jake Wald (Alexandria, VA/TC Williams) singled home a run, and the Colonials scored their third run when Wald was picked-off at first but stayed in a run-down long enough to let freshman Tony Dokoupil (Pau, Pau, WV/Severna Park) to score from third base for the 3-0 advantage.
The Colonials added another run in the eighth inning to extend their lead to 4-2. Senior Matt Walker (Gibsonia, PA/Richland) led off with a bunt single and was later singled home by Dokoupil. Walker finished the day 2-4 and extended his hitting streak to 12 games.
Maryland scored two runs in the ninth to make the score 4-2.
Conden earned his eighth win of the season for his efforts on the mound. Conden threw six scoreless innings, allowing four hits and striking out one Terrapin batter in the game. The win improves Conden's record to 8-1 on the season.
The Colonials return to action this weekend when they travel to Pittsburgh, PA to take on the Dukes of Duquesne in a three-game series. A double-header is schedule is set to begin at noon on Saturday, and the final game of the series is set for Sunday at noon.
