Baseball Splits Double-Header With Virginia Tech

Washington, DC-- The George Washington baseball team split a double-header with Virginia Tech in their Atlantic 10 Conference opener at Barcroft Park in Arlington, VA on March 25. The Colonials lost the first game 5-2, but bounced back to win the second game 7-1.

The Colonials jumped-out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning on sophomore Matt Krimmel's (Schnecksville, PA/Parkland) solo homer. The home run was Krimmel's second on the year.
The Hokies responded in the second inning by tying the game at one on a RBI single by Chris Hutchison off the first base bag. The Colonials took the lead in the third inning 2-1 when senior Matt Walker (Gibsonia, PA/U. of South Carolina) singled home freshman Travis Crowder (Manassas, VA/Osbourn).
Sophomore Jason Bush picked up the win for the Hokies, improving his record to 3-3. Bush pitched six innings, allowing only two runs and striking out the three batters. Junior Adam Belicic (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin) took the loss for the Colonials, dropping his record to 3-4. Belicic got the loss despite only giving-up three runs and striking out five Hokie batters.
In the second game, GW got a solid start from freshman Greg Conden (Owego, NY/Owego Free Academy) to pick-up the victory. Conden pitched 6 and a third innings, allowing no earned runs and striking out six batters. The win improved Conden's record to 4-0.
The Hokies opened the scoring in the second inning by using a Colonial error to take a 1-0 lead. The Colonials took the lead in the same inning on junior Eric Mitchell's (Thurmont, MD/DuBois) two-run home run. The home run was Mitchell's first on the season.
The Colonials added another run in the third inning on sophomore Mike Bassett's (Paramus, NJ/Paramus) solo homer, and two more in the fifth inning on senior Ryan Dacey's (Annapolis, MD/Annapolis) two-run shot to extend their lead to 5-1. The Colonials added two more in the sixth to close-out the scoring.
Freshman Joe Saunders took the loss for the Hokies, his first on the season. Saunders allowed seven runs in five innings, dropping his record to 4-1.
The Colonials return to action tomorrow when they conclude their three-game series with Virginia Tech at Barcoft Park in Arlington, VA at 12:00 p.m.
