Greene, who only threw 81 pitches in the contest, retired the first in order before left fielder Matt Walker got an infield single to lead off the second. But with one out, third baseman Bryant Ward made a great stop and started a double play that got the Pirates out of the inning.
In the third, Greene forced George Washington (1-3) batters into three straight groundouts to shortstop Lee Delfino and retired the side in order in the fourth as well. With two outs in the fifth, first baseman Dan Rouhier singled to left for the Colonials' only other hit of the game.
From there, Greene retired the next 13 batters in order to complete the contest. Greene picked up his first collegiate win by facing just one more than the minimum with four strikeouts and no walks while allowing just the two hits. He also forced 13 groundball outs and nine fly outs.
ECU (4-1) got what it needed offensively for the win in the second inning. With one out, Delfino hit a solo home run - the Pirates' first of the season - to left center for a 1-0 Pirate lead. Cliff Godwin then singled and moved to third on Erik Bakich's double. Ward then singled to bring across Godwin before Nick Schnabel hit a sacrifice fly to right that scored Bakich for the Pirates' final run.
Chris Worth took the loss for George Washington, going 6.0 innings allowing six hits and three runs with four walks and two strikeouts. Mike O'Connor finished the contest going 2.0 innings without allowing a hit and striking out one. East Carolina and George Washington will play the second contest of the three-game series on Saturday, February 19 at 1:00 p.m. at Harrington Field.
