Monroe Suffers Concussion
WASHINGTON, DC (Nov. 13) - GW senior Mike King had the hot hand hitting 12-17 from the field, including three treys, as the Colonials easily defeated One World All-Stars, 96-80, in the Colonials' final preseason exhibition game Monday night at Smith Center.
The victory proved costly, however, when GW sophomore Chris Monroe collided with teammate Patrick Ngongba while the two were chasing a rebound with just over two minutes remaining in the game. The collision sent both players to the floor. Ngongba soon got to his feet while Monroe laid face down for several minutes. Monroe eventually left the court under his own power and was diagnosed with a concussion.
Monroe, who scored 27 points with five steals in GW's previous exhibition game Nov. 8, will be monitored during the next few days.
Though both teams shot reasonably well (49 percent for GW; 45 percent for One World), the game was sloppy at times as the teams combined to commit 38 turnovers. GW had 14 steals led by King's four and three by senior Bernard Barrow. Barrow also dished out a game-high 11 assists.
Sophomore SirValiant Brown came off the bench to score 25 points in 30 minutes while Albert Roma grabbbed a team-high seven rebounds.
One World took a 5-4 lead two minutes into the game for it's only lead of the game. The Colonials responded with an 11-0 run and breezed to a 52-35 advantage at the break. GW built the lead to as much as 23 midway through the second half before settling for the 16-point victory.
GW (0-0) opens the regular season Saturday, Nov. 18, at home against Texas A&M at 7:30 p.m.
