WASHINGTON - Aaron Thompson has returned to George Washington as an assistant coach for the 2026-27 season, his third year in the role and fourth overall in the program, Head Coach Chris Caputo announced on Tuesday.
"We're thrilled to bring Aaron Thompson back to GW," Caputo said. "Aaron is one of the most talented young coaches in the business. He is wise beyond his years and had a huge impact on helping our program move forward over the last three years. We're excited about his new role on our staff."
Thompson briefly departed GW following the 2025-26 season to accept a Director of Player Development role at his alma mater Butler, before accepting an assistant coach role back in Foggy Bottom.
"I'm excited to be back and continue helping this program build toward sustained success and win when the stakes are high," Thompson said.
The Glenn Dale, Md., native is Butler's all-time assists leader but cut his teeth in the high school ranks at Paul VI Catholic High School in Fairfax, where he earned Washington Post All-Met First Team honors.
He joined GW as the Director of Player Development in August 2023 and was elevated to Assistant Coach prior to the 2024-25 season, a role he held for two seasons. The promotion added on-court coaching and recruiting responsibilities to his role where he has been instrumental in the development of the Revolutionaries' guards the last two seasons.
While on staff, the Buff & Blue have made back-to-back postseason appearances and shattered the school record with 351 3-pointers last season. GW also set the program record with 548 assists and averaged 81.4 ppg, the fourth-highest mark in school history. Point guard Jean Aranguren, who returns for his senior season in 2026-27, also notched the program's second-ever triple-double under Thompson's watch.
