Tennis Hits the Road for Matches at VCU, Navy

WASHINGTON – The George Washington tennis team returns to action this week for two road matches, facing its first Atlantic 10 opponent on Tuesday at VCU and traveling to Annapolis for a showdown with Navy on Sunday.
VCU, the reigning A-10 Champions from a season ago, enters the week 4-4, having picked up a 5-2 victory over Howard on Saturday. The Rams started the season 3-1 with wins over Temple, Longwood and Morgan State, before dropping three-straight matches over a two-week stretch.
Including results from the fall season, VCU is led by Sofia Jane Thorne, whose amassed an 11-5 record in singles play. This spring, Thorne is 4-2 in first singles and 1-0 in the second flight, while teammate Andrea Magallanes is 4-2, with all matches being played at No. 5. In doubles, the duo of Sara Alba and Viktoria Lackova leads the way with a 5-2 record, all of which came in the third flight.
Navy hosts GW on Sunday, having already competed in 13 matches this year, holding a 9-4 record to date. The Midshipmen have won four in a row, stringing together victories over Villanova, George Mason, Georgetown and Towson. Sunday's match will be part of a doubleheader for Navy, hosting A-10 program Saint Joseph's later that day at 2:00 p.m.
Nicole Fu is a combined 19-5 in singles action, including the fall season. Fu has a 2-2 record in first singles, is 2-0 in the second flight and 2-2 in No. 3, for a combined 6-4 record during the spring. Emma Gu (2-1) and Olivia Fermo (1-3) have also split time at the No. 1 spot for Navy this spring. In doubles, the pairing of Payton Philemon and Anna Jordaan lead the way with a perfect 5-0 mark in the second flight thus far.
