ROCK HILL, S.C. – GW softball regrouped well with a pair of wins on Saturday after dropping both of Friday's contests. GW picked up a pair of narrow decisions, with a 3-2 win over Mount St. Mary's and a 2-0 shutout of Presbyterian. The Revolutionaries improved to 4-4 overall with the wins.
Junior pitcher/utility Cece Smith was a factor for GW in both games. In game one, Smith — who almost exclusively has pitched since coming to GW — answered any questions about her being rostered as a utility in addition to a pitcher, as the GW star hurler was inserted in the starting batting order for the first time in her career and she made good on that decision. Tied up at 1-1 in the fifth, Smith homered in just her fourth career plate appearance to give GW a 2-1 edge.
The Mount quickly tied the game at 2-2, but GW came through late when Cadence Gilliland hammered her first double of the season to drive in Paige Hayward from first and give GW the deciding score in the 3-2 win.
In the game two rematch vs. Presbyterian, GW called upon first-year Jazlene Ramos to deliver the big offensive moment, driving home the game's only runs on her second-inning single. The Buff & Blue collected seven hits in both games Saturday, a figure the team has equaled in four of its last five games.
GW's pitching was quality in both wins. Sophia Torreso started game one and went 4.1 innings, limiting The Mount to one earned run on five hits. Chloe Greene pitched the final 2.2 and earned the win, giving up no runs on just two hits.Â
Smith was excellent in the circle in game two, throwing GW's first complete-game shutout of the season while allowing only four baserunners on two hits and two walks. Smith lowered her ERA to a team-best 1.80 in her first win of the season.
GW has one game left at the Coach Cooke Memorial Tournament, tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. vs. Mount St. Mary's.Â
