WASHINGTON - Following a dominant display to open Atlantic 10 play, GW men's basketball center Rafael Castro was named the league's Player of the Week on Monday.
Castro showcased his Conference Player of the Year capabilities in the double-digit wins over Richmond and La Salle, averaging 26.5 ppg, 10.0 rpg, 3.0 spg and 2.5 bpg while shooting 77.8%. He ranked among the top-25 nationally in field goal percentage, points, steals and offensive rebounds over the last week.
The Preseason First Team All-Conference selection tied his career-high with 27 points in the A-10 opener at Richmond, adding six rebounds and three steals. He then one-upped that performance on Saturday vs. La Salle with 26 points, 14 rebounds, four blocks, three steals and two assists.
In the process, he became the first player in the country this season with at least 26 points, 14 rebounds, four blocks and three steals in a game, the first to do so overall since Yaxel Lendeborg (with UAB) last year and the first A-10 player to do so since 2005.
In 20 career regular season games against A-10 teams, Castro has averaged 17.4 ppg, 9.6 rpg, 2.1 apg, 1.5 bpg and 1.3 spg while shooting 68.0% (132/194) from the floor and reaching double figures in 18 straight contests.
GW is back on the floor Tuesday night for a national TV showcase at Dayton. Tip is scheduled for 8 p.m. on CBS Sports Network.
