Buff & Blue split doubleheader on Sunday, win series 2-1 over URI
WASHINGTON - The GW softball team closed regular season play on the Vern, splitting Sunday's doubleheader against Rhode Island. The Revolutionaries took game one comfortably in a 7-0 win, before falling, 3-0, in game two and losing at home for the first time in A-10 play in 2025. GW moves to 30-18, including 14-9 in the A-10 ahead of the regular-season finale next weekend at Loyola Chicago.Â
GW 7, RHODE ISLAND 0
Anna Reed pitched her eighth complete game of the season in game one of the doubleheader as GW cruised to a 7-0 victory to clinch the series win and tie the program's single-season team shutout record at 13 shutouts.
Reed was in control the whole way in her team-leading 15th victory of the season, holding the Rams to five hits with four punchouts. Rhode Island had its fair share of scoring opportunities, but Reed excelled in situational pitching to strand nine visiting baserunners.Â
Reed pitched with a lead for nearly the whole game, as GW plated three runs in the first after loading the bases. Emi Todoroki smacked a single through the right side to score the first run before GW plated another two on sacrifices from Kaylee Layfield and Carolyn Skotz.
GW added to the lead in the second, as the one-two punch of Ashley Corpuz and Madi Mays delivered consecutive RBI knocks to push the lead to 5-0. Two innings later, the same duo delivered the same sequence, an RBI double for Corpuz followed by an RBI single from Mays, to create even more separation and give GW a seven-run edge.Â
The Buff & Blue flirted with the eight-run threshold to end the game early via the run-rule, but were held to seven.Â
GW got it done at the top of the lineup, as each of the first four batters accounted for two of GW's eight hits.
GW 0, Rhode Island 3
With their ace back in the circle, Rhode Island stumped GW's attack to salvage a 3-0 win in the finale.
Avery Vale-Cruz, who held GW to just one run in Rhode Island's 1-0 loss on Saturday, had GW's number again and she went the distance with just three GW hits allowed. Like Rhode Island in game one of the doubleheader, GW had its chances with nine base runners left on base throughout the game.
GW's Chloe Greene made the start for GW and was held accountable for one of the two runs scored during her 6.0 innings in the circle. She had a scoreless outing until Rhode Island broke the ice in the fifth, later adding solo runs in each the sixth and seventh. Sophia Torreso was inserted to start the seventh and was knocked for one run earned as Rhode Island extended its lead to 3-0.Â
Heffley, Corpuz and Layfield had one hit apiece for GW.
