CHICAGO - The George Washington University softball team split the two games of Saturday's doubleheader at Loyola Chicago. GW came from behind to win a turbulent game one before being edged out by a late home run in game two. The Revolutionaries move to 31-19, which includes a 15-10 record in the A-10 with one game remaining in the regular season.
GW 10, Loyola Chicago 9
A sixth-inning Daniella Lew two-RBI double put GW ahead for good in a wild back-and-forth affair in game one that saw a total of 19 runs, 23 hits and six errors between the Revolutionaries and Ramblers.
GW scored one with the bases loaded in the first, but fell behind quickly as Loyola Chicago mounted a 6-1 lead by the end of the second inning. In the absence of offensive leader Ashley Corpuz, Emi Todoroki and Lew stepped up with seven combined RBI, which included four RBI for Todoroki and her first career home run - a three-run no-doubter in the third to bring GW back within two runs.
In the fourth, the Ramblers pushed the lead back up to three to make it 7-4, but GW recaptured the momentum by tying the game with a three-run fifth that started with a Todoroki sac fly and ended with a Lew RBI double.
Just as GW had leveled the action, the Ramblers snatched the lead right back with two scores in the bottom of the fifth. The deficit would have been more, had Allison Heffley - playing in left field - not gunned down a runner with a perfect throw to home.
GW kept its foot on the gas in the sixth, cutting the lead back to one on a Carolyn Skotz RBI single, before Lew delivered the game-winning hit with a two run double which put GW in the driver's seat to the finish.
Chloe Greene wrapped the wild contest with a zero-run, two-inning save. Sophia Torreso picked up the win after throwing 4.0 innings and keeping GW in the contest in the middle innings.
Five Revolutionaries finished with two-hit games (Gilliland, Layfield, Mays. Todoroki, Lew), while Heffley and Madie Hernendez drew two walks apiece.
GW 2, Loyola Chicago 3
Looking to clinch the series in game two of the doubleheader, GW needed another come-from-behind victory after falling behind early. However, in the bottom of the fifth and just after the visitors evened the score at 2-2, Loyola Chicago's Haley Wallace blasted a solo home to take a 3-2 lead which the Ramblers held to the finish.
It was Anna Reed GW and Andie Broniewicz for Loyola Chicago starting in game two in the circle. Both were tagged with two runs and had limited strikeout numbers as both teams were putting the ball in play. Chloe Greene again pitched the final 2.0 innings for GW - the solo home run off Greene was her only blemish over 4.0 innings across the doubleheader.
The Ramblers' leadoff batter Riley Owens reached safely and scored in both of her at-bats in both the first and third innings to give Loyola Chicago its 2-0 lead. In the fifth, Layfield nabbed GW's only RBI on a single through the right side, before Madi Mays reached on a fielding error by the Ramblers' shortstop to score Gilliland.Â
Both teams finished with six hits, two walks and one error.
