WASHINGTON - After a pregame Senior Day Ceremony to honor the program's eight graduating seniors and graduate students, the GW softball team battled the Rams and two lengthy rain and lightning delays before picking up a 1-0 win in game one of the series. The Revolutionaries improved to 29-17, which includes a perfect 10-0 mark at home in A-10 play.Â
Game two of the series will now be played as part of a doubleheader beginning at 11:00 a.m. at the GW Softball Field.
Starting pitchers Cece Smith and Avery Vale-Cruz were each efficient in the circle to open the game, but after just over two scoreless, hitless innings were played, the initial delay of nearly 90 minutes occurred. The game resumed in the top of the third and had both teams getting runners aboard in the first frame back, but without success scoring.
Madi Mays delivered the game's only run on a two-out solo home run in the fourth, launching her third long ball of the season to give the Revolutionaries the lead.
Rhode Island looked close to leveling the score with runners in scoring position on multiple occasions late in the game, but GW reliever Chloe Greene locked up the win with only one hit allowed over the last 3.1 innings.Â
The series resumes tomorrow at 11:00 a.m., with game one of Sunday's doubleheader streaming on ESPN+.
