WASHINGTON – After receiving the ninth seed in the postseason coaches poll, the George Washington tennis team will face eighth-seeded Dayton at 11:30 p.m. Thursday in the opening round of the Atlantic 10 Championship. The USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla., will serve as the host site for the tournament.
GW finished the regular season 6-11 overall, winning two matches in conference play to pick up the ninth seed. Dayton is one of five conference teams the Buff & Blue did not face in the regular season. The winner of Thursday's contest will move on to face top overall seed Fordham, who finished 15-4 overall and a perfect 8-0 in A-10 matches this spring. It's the first time the Rams have been awarded the top seed in program history.
The Flyers, who hold a 10-11 overall record, played in just three conference matches this season, going 2-1 in those contests. Dayton fell, 5-2, to Duquesne on Feb. 7, but picked up 4-0 wins over Saint Joseph's and St. Bonaventure. St. Joe's is the only common conference opponent GW shares with Dayton this year, with both teams emerging victorious against the Hawks.
Dayton's top-performing duo this season is Natalie Osiecki and Neena Katauskas with a 6-4 record in doubles action. All 10 of their completed matches have come in the first flight. Katauskas also leads the program with 12 singles wins, 10 in the second flight and two in the #1 spot.
