Crimson snap GW’s win streak at seven
WASHINGTON - The George Washington University softball team was defeated 1-0 by Harvard on Wednesday afternoon at the GW Softball Field. The Revolutionaries' win streak ended at seven as GW dropped to 16-9 on the season.
A battle of pitching and defense through and through saw its only run of the afternoon scored by Harvard in the sixth inning. The run came on a single to right with a runner on second base, forcing a close play at the plate that went the visitors' way.
Cece Smith pitched well for GW in her 10th start of 2024, keeping a clean sheet until the sixth inning. Anna Reed, playing against her former team, replaced Smith for a clean inning in the seventh.
It took Harvard three pitchers to get the job done as it held GW to four hits and two walks on the afternoon. GW's hits each came by a different part of the order, as Ashley Corpuz, Madi Mays, Cadence Gilliland and Emi Todoroki notched hits. Mays, also playing against her former team, looked to have a rally-starting double to lead off the seventh inning, but GW's chance at a new life ended three batters later.
The GW Revs go back to conference play this weekend as the Revolutionaries travel to Amherst, Mass., for a three-game set against UMass on Saturday and Sunday. All three games this weekend will be streamed on ESPN+.
